Teaching Art

Wednesday, January 28th Donuts, anyone? My middle school students recently created realistic donuts using oil pastels. They did such a great job, I wanted to share! For my fellow art teachers, this lesson teaches the element of value , and how to blend colors to make realistic-looking donuts.  That's TWO concepts in ONE! :)  I told them we were going to make donuts, and their first response was an excited, "really??" so I had to quickly follow it with " drawing donuts " :) First I showed them part of a  video  that explains the elements of art very well. I play one clip at a time and then build off of the explanations. Once we have talked about the element of value, I told them that we were going to practice making value scales using the oil pastels. Tip -Make sure each oil pastel container has "donut colors" (tan, light brown, white, shades of yellow) before you start, or you'll have a class full of complaining students who "can't make d...

Monday, December 29th I hope you all had a lovely holiday! Mine was spent with my favorite people and was filled with the joy of a four year old's excitement that Santa visited :) It was also my 8 month old's first Christmas and he loved playing with the paper and bows, and also his new toys.  I personally like to shop for Christmas decor after the day, as I always find great decor and gift ideas at lower prices.  That's why my Etsy shop  is having an After-Christmas Inventory Clear-Out! How to lose weight and get healthy (without really trying)

Thursday, December 18th Ok, the title is a little   misleading.  I've struggled with my weight and being healthy for my whole life and I finally decided I was tired of it. I had tried fads like Intermittent Fasting and not eating any junk food and failed. Not only did I feel like a failure, but out of disappointment in myself and wanting to feel better, I would end up overeating and then feel disappointed because of that as well. It's been a vicious circle for a long time. After I had my second baby in April of this year, I thought I would really do it this time-finally lose the baby weight and then some.  If I had been successful, I would not be here writing this.  It has taken many false starts, and giving myself a LOT of grace, but I feel like I've finally discovered what works for me. I was always trying to be "perfect" and if I "messed up" by eating some junk, I would get down on myself and give up. It took me a long time to realize that I don'...

An Artist's First Blog

Wednesday, December 17th I'm not totally sure what I want this blog to be about.  I thought it could be a way to share some ideas and my artwork.  And possibly my health and fitness journey.  And maybe some about my kids. I just started selling my art recently as a way to make our life more comfortable for my family. It has been fun, but frustrating getting a business started and trying to make my artwork visible to a large population on the internet.  Creating my art is fun. Adding my prints to items and seeing how they look on various products has been fun too. Advertising and getting my art and products visible is tough.  Making sales is tough. Being persistent is tough, especially at the beginning. I'm sure I'm not the only one on this journey, which is why I'm hoping to connect with people in the same boat. I hope to connect with you  caitlinrosecreates.etsy.com
